Addresses that are lacking an address number (and thus don't have a full address) represent places that do not have an address number, but are included because it is important to identify their locations.   These include places such as the Saint Elizabeth's Power House and the Albert Einstein Statue   These records will have a value of 'PLACE' in the ‘TYPE_’  field.  These records are all associated with an alias names (place name) in the alias table.

The 4 quadrants are Northeast (NE), Northwest (NW), Southeast (SE) and Southwest (SW) and shall be abbreviated as shown above.  All addresses in Washington DC have a quadrant attached to them (with the exception of the US Capitol building, which is at the central point of the addressing grid).  These quadrant designations are critical to the location of addresses in Washington DC, and must be incorporated into every address.  For example there exists:
  • 500 12TH STREET SE (CVS Pharmacy)
  • 500 12TH STREET SW (Office Building)
  • 500 12TH STREET NE (Residential)
  • 500 12TH STREET NW (Parking Garage)

It assists in transforming non standardized addresses into standardized address. It works as a sort of find & replace. There are over 1,000 records in the Street Name Alias Table.

  • Until now many National Park Service (NPS) locations on the Mall and beyond did not have street addresses. Working with NPS for many months, DC GIS assisted them in creating logical addresses for 53 locations. These locations include memorials, kiosks, restroom buildings and more. The Washington Monument was assigned 1551 INDEPENDENCE AVE SW. These addresses have been added to DC's Master Address Repository. This is important because it makes it easier to locate these locations.
  • Updated Roadwaysegment IDs in Address Records.  These change as the roadwaysegments are updated by DDOT.

Did You Know?

Even address numbers are assigned on the left side in ascending order. Odd numbers are assigned on the right side of the street in ascending order. Determining which side of the street is left or right is based on one’s direction facing away from the U.S. Capitol Building. There are exceptions to this rule
