Even and Odd Addresses

Even address numbers are assigned on the left side of the street as the numbers ascend. Odd numbers are assigned on the right side of the street as the numbers ascend. That is the side of the street is determined as one faces away from the US Capitol Building. Please see the below image from the Capitol Hill Neighborhood.

It should be noted that a very small percentage of addresses are not assigned that way and are thus considered address anomalies (large pdf).

i just figured that the odd on one side, even on the other convention was random, and just flipped for different quadrants to make things different.

thanks for showing that there's a logic behind it!
